Foucault’s Device — a poem by Silent Musings
From the Community
Back and Forth Trying to find my place Swinging as the earth spins Ever in motion Incapable of remaining centered Foucault’s devise The metaphor of my life In my imagination I am still In perfect balance It appears impossible In spite of the simplicity of the illusion. And yet I am the paradox Before my wave becomes another form.
I loved this poem by
for a number of reasons:It prompted me to go on a 'track and trace' exercise, which was quite a fun adventure. With a background in Psychology, I thought that 'Foucault' referred to the sociologist Michel Foucault. Something wasn't quite adding up, which led me to reason no. 2...
I noticed that this poem was a response to a prompt shared by
(👇🏽 ) - which was in itself exciting. That's where I learned that there's another Foucault, who invented this pendulum.I had no idea that this pendulum existed... but when I saw it, it simultaneously felt familiar (like I'd known of it forever) and awesome (like it blew my mind). Like encountering a familiar tree that you walk past everyday, in the glow of midsummer twilight for the first and you go 'Wow.' Don't we live in such as bizarre and magical universe?
Speaking of bizarre and magical worlds, I also wanted to share with you Silent Musing's photography. We live in this world, and if we would notice its magic for just a few moments we might experience our lives unbearably saturated with richness and possibility.
I have no idea who writes
. There are no 'artist's notes' to accompany the photos and poetry. I find myself searching for it, intrigued and curious... yet when I discover it isn't there, I simply accept it and give myself the freedom to re-experience the piece itself, one more time. It's rather delightful and refreshing.

Criollo — a music mix and artwork by N Λ T U R R I T U / Λ R T C E S T R A L
From the Internet
I came across this playlist entirely by accident. It felt like a small divine intervention as I find myself in a space of healing, recovery, and reflection.
There's also something both 'Earthly' and 'Other-Worldly' with this compilation, which nicely captures the surreal sensibility of
’s work.A note from the artist:
Dear family,
I like to share a new journey as an hommage to the wonderful and powerful strain of criollo cacao. All of us use it to heal, to vibrate high, to share the medicine and the most important thing: to come together - as a connectorness she has this power to brings us closer to our center. Within ourselves and especially with others to open up the circles and to feel the family.
Gracias por tu vibra, tu sanación y amor.
I looked up what 'Criollo' means. In this case, it refers to the first description, but I found the other references interesting too:
A cacao tree variety that produces thin-shelled beans of high quality
A person from South America who was born of Spanish descent.
A horse of South American breed.
If anyone wants to discuss the etymology of this word, count me in...!

The Foucault Pendulum — an invention by Léon Foucault
From the Internet
If you didn't know what a Foucault Pendulum was, now you do. And may I note that this took at least 32 hours to film (that's the time it takes for the pendulum to complete its cycle)… so acknowledgment to Kurtis Baute for his dedication to creating this video (😮)!
🌌 SPEAKING OF SURREAL 🌌
Silent Musing's photography prompted to share some of my own photos. I take an inordinate amount (thanks, iPhone) and most of them stay cooped up in my personal cloud of clutter.
I’ve learnt so much from this post, thank you for producing it!
I hear the desire in this poem to be centered and still; but also I love the idea of shifting ever so slowly in cadence with the earth's rhythms - "in my imagination, ever in motion, swinging as the earth spins"
