What the Fox — a poem by Marie Fallon
From the Community
What the Fox
A flash of flame leaps out from the fire
off into the distance.
He cannot see me in my light.
Come with me, he calls
I will show you the fire that is in darkness.
my eyes blink into the night,
my ears stretch and the hair on my head ripples
in
anticipation.
Is this love?
Is this knowing?
You balance on the night
avoiding the fire from which you came.
You hear our heavy footsteps
and want to run.
But wait
I want to run with you in the night
until my lungs burn with fire
until I yearn to bury myself in the cool earth.
I feel your fur grow out from my spine,
tendrils of golden light
lifting me up
until my feet
dance in
the air above the earth.
If I touch your fur, will it burn my fingers?
Or wrap them in infinite softness?
Burning rascal.
Eyes of an old warrior,
mouth curving in a knowing grandmother's smirk.
We are the same.
I peel back my skin.
I pull my legs out of my legs
and pull my arms out of my arms
new limbs glowing with fire.
I twist off my head,
throw my pale smooth skin aside
and burst into fur and blood.
