What’s the Matter? - a poem by Beth Smith
From the Community
What’s the matter?
So many words never quite said
So many messages never quite read
So many gifts never quite given
Soul lacking fuel to stay driven
So much loss to grieve
Yet still so much love to receive
How do we march on
When we feel all hope is gone?
Easy question, easy answer
But the poet is lost
If she withholds her dancer
Often the action is what’s daunting
But the words still linger, haunting
My mind whirrs and purrs
And my words
Well, they can be light and ignite
A mission of ignition will surely bur away the day
If the flame burns too wild
At least that’s what they say
But we know it to be true
It’s not just what we say
But what we do
My mind whirrs and purrs
And my words
Well, they can be light and ignite
Or be filled with fear, bitterness, and spite
And therefore smite, inspiring only fight or flight
Words without face
Can be so misplaced
Many a reply
But so often too shy
Who am I?
Who am I?
What does it matter?
What is the matter?
What is matter?
Matter is earth, wind, fire, water
Matter is mother, father, son, daughter
Matter is sister, brother
Friend, lover
Stranger, other
Matter is all
And even when beauty falls
Love still calls
And love is all
All that matters
Remember your flame
And let it shine
Peel back the layers
Let in the divine

Also, I didn’t find this on my own. So I’d like to shout out to Teresa Havvas who first shared this with me.
